The Story of Krishna and the Fruit Vendor
In the town of Gokul, where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, life was simple and filled with love. Every morning, people would gather at the riverbank, watching Krishna and his friends play mischief, while the cows grazed in the fields. Krishna’s charm captivated everyone—not just humans, but animals, birds, and nature itself.
The Arrival of the Fruit Vendor
One day, a poor fruit vendor visited Nanda’s home (Krishna’s foster father). She carried a large basket of fresh fruits on her head, shouting out, “Fruits! Juicy fruits for sale!” Krishna, who was only a small child at the time, heard her call and ran outside.
The vendor saw little Krishna toddling toward her, his eyes twinkling with joy. Dressed in a yellow dhoti, his skin the color of dark clouds, and with a peacock feather tucked in his hair, Krishna looked divine even as a child. The woman felt an immediate affection toward him, though she did not recognize his divine nature.
The Exchange of Love
Krishna approached her with a handful of rice grains as payment, for he had no coins. However, most of the rice fell through his tiny fingers, and only a few grains remained in his palm. The vendor smiled warmly. Despite the poor offering, she could not resist Krishna’s endearing presence.
Touched by his innocence and captivated by his charm, she said, “Take whatever fruits you like, child.” Krishna’s tiny hands began picking the juiciest mangoes and guavas, and the fruit vendor laughed with joy.
Without expecting anything in return, she filled his little hands with fruits. As Krishna ran back to his house, her heart brimmed with peace. She thought to herself, “This little boy has stolen not just my fruits but my heart.”
The Divine Blessing
When the vendor returned to her cart, she found a miracle waiting for her. Her empty basket was now overflowing—not with ordinary fruits, but with precious jewels and gold coins! Tears welled in her eyes as she realized she had been blessed by the Lord himself. But what touched her the most was not the material wealth—rather, it was the joy and peace she felt from her simple exchange with Krishna.
She understood the true meaning of love and devotion. When you give with a pure heart, the universe responds in ways beyond imagination. Krishna’s smile, his innocence, and his small gesture of acceptance were far more valuable than any wealth.
Moral of the Story
This beautiful story reminds us that selfless love and giving without expectations lead to blessings beyond our understanding. Krishna teaches us that when we offer anything to the divine—no matter how small—it is the intention behind the offering that matters. Life becomes more fulfilling when we give with open hearts and receive with gratitude.
