The Birth of Krishna: A Tale of Destiny and Deception
On the night of Devaki’s wedding, a dark prophecy unraveled: her eighth child would be the end of her brother, the tyrant prince Kamsa. Consumed by fear and rage, Kamsa shackled Devaki and her husband Vasudeva in a dungeon, turning what should have been a celebration into a nightmare. One by one, Kamsa mercilessly killed their newborns, ensuring that the prophecy would never come true. Yet by divine intervention, their seventh child, Balarama, was miraculously transferred into the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s other wife.
The night of the eighth child’s birth was unlike any other—a moonless sky raged with storms, and thunder shook the earth. In the midst of this chaos, Devaki gave birth to a radiant baby boy. As they looked upon their newborn son, Krishna, a miraculous moment unfolded: the heavy iron doors of their prison swung open, and the guards lay in a deep, enchanted sleep.
A celestial voice whispered to Vasudeva: “Carry the child to safety, across the river to Gokula.” Without hesitation, Vasudeva placed the baby in a basket and ventured into the raging waters of the Yamuna. As he waded in, the wild river miraculously parted, making way for him. A great serpent, Sheshanaga, unfurled its mighty hood, shielding the infant Krishna from the relentless rain.
At last, Vasudeva reached the quiet village of Gokula. There, in the humble home of Nanda and Yashoda, he gently placed Krishna beside Yashoda, who lay asleep with her newborn daughter. With a heavy heart, Vasudeva took the baby girl back to the dungeon, hoping to buy Krishna more time.
When Kamsa heard of the birth, he stormed into the prison, his heart set on ending the child’s life. With cruel hands, he snatched the baby from Devaki and Vasudeva. But just as he prepared to strike, the infant slipped from his grasp and transformed into Goddess Durga in a blinding flash of light.
Hovering above him, the Goddess’s voice echoed through the dungeon:
“Fool! The one you fear is already beyond your reach. Krishna is safe—and your doom is near.”
Kamsa stood paralyzed, his worst fear realized. The wheels of fate had begun to turn, and there was no escaping what lay ahead.
